Pilioha- (Self-Titled), Pilioha Records 2007.
It must have been said a million times, but it's true: this group sounds dead up like Hui Ohana. Of course, they can hardly deny patterning themselves on the legendary Hawaiian group (in fact, Led Kaapana has given them some guidance). And why not? It's hard to get enough of those sweet three part harmonies, groovin bass lines, and tasty lead guitar - all of which this Cd delivers in spades. Highlights include the "Riders in the Sky," a cowboy movie classic down Hawaiian style, and a killer version of "Kaula 'Ili." "Everything," is also a nice counter part to the Hui Ohana's "God Bless My Daddy."
Similar to Hui Ohana, the group is composed of two cousins and a hanai brother, also united by the fact that they are all teachers or working on their teaching degrees, and you can feel the family spirit between them when they perform. I had the fortune to see this group live at the Kona Slack Key festival and they were awesome. Kamuela, the lead guitar player, almost goes too far with over the top stunts like playing with a slippah, etc. It's a fun show to watch, and a no-brainer for fans of Hui Ohana... yet despite all the comparisons, this group brings it's own mark to the music as well and is well worth getting. -Sept. 07
